JU suspends 5 BCL activists for mugging

The authorities of Jahangirnagar University (JU) today suspended five students, all activists of JU unit Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), for their alleged involvement in mugging and beating up a car driver on the campus on Saturday.

The authorities also formed a four-member probe committee and asked the body to submit its report within the next seven days, JU acting proctor ASM Firoz Ul Hasan told our university correspondent.

The five suspended students are- Sanjoy Ghosh of Drama and Dramatics department, Rayhan Patwary of Geological Sciences, Al Razi of Government and Politics, Shah Mustak Saikat of Computer Science and Technology and Mokarram Shiblu of Philosophy department.

Earlier on Saturday morning, the five students mugged Monir Hossain, 35, who is a son-in-law of an employee of the university. After mugging Monir, they took him behind the university’s Botanical Garden and beaten him mercilessly with iron chains.

Monir is undergoing treatment at Enam Medical and College Hospital.

Of the five students, Sanjoy, Rayhan and Razi are followers of President of BCL unit of JU Jewel Rana, and Shiblu and Saikat are the followers of BCL general secretary of JU SM Abu Sufian Chanchal.

Earlier, the university authority suspended Rayhan for two years from the university for his involvement in another mugging incident on the campus last year.

Contacted, JU unit BCL General Secretary SM Abu Sufian Chanchal said, “We, BCL unit of JU, will not tolerate any kind of crime. We are looking into the matter. If they are involved in this incident, sterns action would be taken soon.”
