BNP’s nationwide demo Tuesday against gas price hike

BNP will stage demonstrations across the country on Tuesday protesting the government’s decision to hike gas tariff.

The party leaders and activists will also hold similar programme in all thanas of the capital the same day.

BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi announced the protest programme at a press conference at BNP’s Nayapaltan central office on Monday.

“Our party will stage demonstrations in all districts and metropolitan cities across the country on Tuesday in protest against the anti-people decision of increasing gas price,” he said.

He said their party’s district and city units will hold rallies or bring out processions at their convenient time.

On Sunday, Chairman of the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) Monwar Islam said the average gas price has been raised by 32.8 percent for the retail consumers in the country with effect from Monday (July 1).

As per the new price hike, the household consumers having single burner will have to pay Tk 925 a month instead of the existing Tk 750 while the double burner users will have to pay Tk 975 instead of the existing Tk 800.

Rizvi alleged that government has continued making onslaught on the lives and livelihoods of common people with state policies.

Mentioning that the gas price was raised sixth times in the last 10 years, he said the fresh move of hiking the gas tariff was taken to create a scope of plundering public money the ruling party men and their relatives.

He said agriculture, industries, transport and power sectors will be badly affected with the rise in gas price. “The lower-income people will be the worst sufferers of it. We strongly condemn and protest the government’s such unlawful decision.”

The BNP leader said the gas price was increased in the country when other countries like India are lowering its tariff. “They did it as they are the enemy of people.”
