BNP swipes at govt for “failure” to ensure public safety

BNP senior leader Selima Rahman on Tuesday alleged that the incidents of killing and rape have turned epidemic in the country due to the government’s “failure” to ensure public safety.

“Now there’s no security of people anywhere in Bangladesh. We’re witnessing anarchy on roads while women and children are being raped and repressed. People are getting killed at different parts of the country,” she said.

The BNP leader further said, “People have no security even at the court. The current government has completely failed to maintain the law and order.”

Selima, a BNP standing committee member, came up with the remarks while speaking at a discussion at the Jatiya Press Club arranged by Jatiyatabadi Nobin Dal demanding BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’s release from jail.

She said no one in the country is now safe when an accused can kill another accused at the courtroom. “Why has such a situation been created in the country? Who had given shelter to Nayan Bond in Barguna?”

The BNP leader alleged that police are now not working for ensuring public security as the government pushed them towards corruption by using them for its political gains.

Selima urged BNP leaders and activists to work as human-shield to protect people and stand beside them for their welfare.

She alleged that their chairperson Khaleda Zia is not getting bail from the court due to the government’s interference. “Our leader has been kept in jail unfairly. The government is unwilling to free her on bail in fear of facing massing a mass-upsurge.”

The BNP leader said they are now overhauling their party to wage a strong movement to free Khaleda from jail.
