‘Govt won’t be spared if Khaleda Zia denied of release’

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today warned that the government would not be spared if it does not ensure immediate release of party’s Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia from jail.

The BNP leader came up with the warning while addressing a rally at Hemyat Uddin Edgah ground in Barishal this afternoon.

“Anti-government movement was kicked off from Barishal. Release Khaleda Zia from jail without wasting time. Otherwise, you (govt) would not be spared,” Fakhrul told the rally.

Calling upon the government to listen the voices of people, Fakhrul underscored the need for talks between the government and opposition parties to get rid of the prevailing situation.

“Please try to understand the people’s pulse and hold a discussion with us so that we can find out a peaceful democratic path to get rid of the situation,” he said.

Referring to the country’s recent spate of murder, rape and women repression, Fakhrul said, “We are getting only the news on rape and murder incidents in the country’s newspapers. Even, the murder incident is taking place on the court yard.”

“If the ruling quarter is hanged onto power for long, the countrymen will be deprived of their due rights and the country will be made dysfunctional,” he said.

He blasted the government for hiking gas price and said farmers are being denied of due price of the crops while the salaries and other benefits of the government officials are being increased.

“The government has indeed taken an anti-people stance to cling on to power depending upon the government officials,” the BNP leader said.

Fakhrul also blasted the government for paying state honor to just late Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad and said the country’s democracy was destroyed during the tenures of the very autocratic ruler.

During the regime of Ershad, many people including students were killed for democracy but ruling Awami League has compromised with him only for the sake of power, he said.

The government, on the other hand, “confined” BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, who fight for democracy, in jail deliberately, the BNP leader said.

“I want to give a clear massage to the government that the countrymen did never embarrass any defeat in the past. We realized our all demands through movement,” Fakhrul said referring to the language movement in 1952, mass upsurge in 1969 and anti-Ershad movement in 1990.

The rally was organised to realise BNP’s demand for immediate release of its imprisoned chairperson.
