Unite to wage anti-government movement: speakers

Politicians and academics on Friday called on the left-wing, progressive and democratic political parties to get united to wage a movement against the government what they termed illegitimate and utterly corrupt.

They said that the Awami League and its allied parties held onto power through a rigged and and manipulated general election held on December 30, 2018, and initiated misrule in the country and failed to fulfil the aspirations of the people.

Now the people of Bangladesh are waiting eagerly to support the left political forces, out of the influences of the two big political parties —Awami League and Bangladesh Nationalist Party, they said while speaking at a discussion held at Bangladesh Medical Association auditorium on Topkhana Road to mark 17th founding anniversary of Ganasamhati Andolan.

Socialist Party of Bangladesh general secretary Khalequzzaman said that the political parties that assumed power after the liberation war failed to act according to the aspiration of the people rather indulged in corruption and misrule.

Awami League had returned to power, but failed to introduce good governance.

As a result people became dissatisfied with the performances of the AL government as eagerly waiting to support a third political force, out of the influences of the two big political parties, Khalequzzaman said.

He proposed that a greater unity of the left-wing, progressive and democratic political parties should be forged which would begin a movement to drive the AL government to quit power.

He also urged the left and democratic political parties to formulate a political programme that would be implemented after assuming power by the alternative political force.

Former Dhaka University professor Ahmed Kamal called on the left political parties to be united and urged them to go to the door to door and stand by the people during their crisis.

The people were waiting to support the political parties who could establish their voting rights, Kamal said.

He also called on the young people specially the young activists of Ganasamhati to struggle for establishing democratic rule in the country.

Nagarik Oikya convener Mahmudur Rahman Manna proposed that his party would join the movement of the left parties to bring democratic rule in the country.

Ganasamhati chief coordinator Zonayed Saki, who chaired the discussion meeting, said that they were waiting to form a greater unity of people to compel the Awami League government to leave power.

Gono Forum general secretary Reza Kibria said that that Awami League had seized the voting rights of the people and the opposition political parties should be united to restore the voting rights.

United Communist League general secretary and coordinator of the Left Democratic Alliance, Mosharraf Hossain Nannu, Communist Party of Bangladesh presidium member Abdullah Kafee Ratan, Revolutionary Workers Party general secretary Saiful Huq, acting executive coordinator of the Ganasamhati Abul Hassan Rubel, central leader Taslima Akhter Lima also spoke at the programme.
