Hasina remains president, Quader gen secy

Sheikh Hasina will remain the president of ruling Bangladesh Awami League for the next three years as the councillors of the ruling party did not chose otherwise saying there is no alternative to her at present.

She has been chosen as party president for the ninth consecutive term.

The councillors also chose Obaidul Quader as general secretary for second consecutive term in the 21st national council of the party on Saturday.

Voting was not necessary as there was no other candidates for the two posts of the organisation that prime minister Sheikh Hasina on Friday called the largest and strongest party in Bangladesh.

BSS adds: The ruling Bangladesh Awami League on Saturday formed its new Parliamentary Board and Local Government Nomination Board.

The nine-member AL Parliamentary Board (ALPB) and 17-member Local Government Nomination Board were announced on the second day of the party’s 21st council held at the Institute of Engineers.

The ALPB members are -– Sheikh Hasina, Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury, Amir Hossain Amu, Tofail Ahmed, Abul Hasanat Abdullah, Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim, Kazi Zafarullah, Obaidul Quader and Rashidul Alam.

The members of Local Government Nomination Board are -- Sheikh Hasina, Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury, Amir Hossain Amu, Tofail Ahmed, Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim, Abul Hasanat Abdullah, Kazi Zafarullah, Mohammad Nasim, Mohammad Abdur Razzaque, Faruk Khan, Obaidul Quader, Md Rashidul Alam, Mahbubul Alam Hanif, Dipu Moni , Jahangir Kabir Nanak, Abdur Rahman and Abdus Sobhan Golap.

All of the presidium and advisory council members of the outgoing committee have retained their posts in the new the committee.

Former shipping minister and labour leader Shajahan Khan has been inducted in the new committee as a presidium member, while two joint secretaries of the previous committee Jahangir Kabir Nanak and Abdur Rahman have also been promoted as presidium members in the new committee.

They are information minister and outgoing committee’s publicity and publication secretary Hasan Mahmud and organising secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim.

The two other joint secretaries of the outgoing body -– Mahbub-ul Alam Hanif and Dipu Moni -– have once again been given the charge of the same posts.

Organising secretaries of the outgoing committee –- Ahmed Hossain, BM Mozammel Haque and Abu Sayeed Al Mahmud Swapan –- have remained in the same posts of the new committee while outgoing central committee members SM Kamal Hossain and Mirza Azam have been promoted as organising secretaries of the new committee.

Office secretary of the outgoing committee Abdus Sobhan Golap has been made publicity and publication secretary of the new committee while Barrister Biplab Barua has been promoted to the post of office secretary from deputy office secretary.

Shammi Akter, Delwar Hossain, Engineer Abdus Sabur, Mrinal Kanti Das, Harunur Rashid, Asim Kumar Ukil, Shamsunnahar Chapa, Rokeya Sultana, Faridunnahar Laily, Sujit Roy Nandi and Meher Afroz chumki have retained their secretariat posts for international affairs, forest and environment, science and technology, liberation war affairs, youth and sports, cultural affairs, education and human resources, health and population affairs, agriculture and cooperatives, relief and social welfare and women affairs respectively.

Photo: PIDThe outgoing committee’s central members Nazibullah Hiru has been made law affairs secretary in the new committee.

After the announcement of the new committee, the prime minister greeted the AL leaders and workers for re-electing her as the party president and urged them to work sincerely for further strengthening the organisation.

“I’ve been leading the party for the last 38 years. So, you (the councilors) would have to consider my age (in the future),” Sheikh Hasina said.

The AL president sought blessings from all in running the party as their (councilors) aspirations.

Later, the party leaders greeted Sheikh Hasina and Obaidul Quader with flower bouquets.

Sheikh Hasina also congratulated Obaidul Quader on his re-election as the party general secretary.
