UN welcomes govt decision to release Khaleda Zia

UN Correspondent from New York

The United Nations has welcomed the Bangladesh government's decision to release BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia from jail.

"We welcome the release of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia as humanitarian ground ", said Farhan Huq the Deputy Spokesperson of the Secretary General. He made this comment when he was asked by the UN Correspondent for a reaction.

The government on Tuesday decided to release BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia for six months suspending her jail term in Zia Orphanage Trust case.

Khaleda Zia has been in jail since she was convicted in the Zia Orphanage Trust case on February 8, 2018, though it is widely believed that her cases are politically motivated.
