Bangladesh lose Tamim, Najmul before lunch

Bangladesh were 69-2 at lunch on the opening day of the first Test against the West Indies at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram on Wednesday.

Opener Shadman Islam was unbeaten on 33 alongside skipper Mominul Haque who was batting with two runs, at the interval.

Mominul earlier won the toss and elected to bat first.

First to go was Tamim Iqbal, who fell shortly after he reclaimed the record of Bangladesh’s leading run-scorer as Bangladesh got off to a positive start after electing to bat first.

Kemar Roach bowled Tamim for nine with an in-swinger in the fifth over of the innings after he took his Test tally to 4,414 runs overtaking Mushfiqur Rahim’s 4, 413.

Najmul Hossain, who was promoted to number three position, was doing a fine job along with Shadman as both the left-handers were playing cautiously and slowly trying to build a partnership.

But a sudden mix-up saw Najmul was run out for 25 runs.

Najmul did not respond to the call of Shadman for a double initially, and then he attempted to fulfil the run but could not reach the line.

It ended their 43-run partnership that promised to give Bangladesh some solidity.

Bangladesh opted for four spinners Shakib Al Hasan, Taijul Islam, Nayeem Hasan and Mehidy Hasan and took Mustafizur Rahman as the lone pacer ahead of Abu Jayed and Ebadot Hossain.

West Indies handed Test debut to Nkrumah Bonner, Kyle Mayers and Shayne Moseley.
