Tigers lose second Test and series

Bangladesh lost their remaining five wickets in the morning session on the fifth day to suffer a 209-run defeat in the second Test against Sri Lanka and lost the series 0-1 at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on Monday.

Bangladesh got rolled over for 227 in their fourth innings as the Tigers could only bat for 23 overs on the final session.

Left-arm spinner Praveen Jayawickrama was the chief destroyer as he claimed three of the remaining wickets and finished with 5- 86 in the second innings while Praveen Mendis took 4-103.

Jayawickrama finished with match figures of 11-178 and became the first Sri Lankan to claim a ten-wicket-haul on Test debut.

Bangladesh hopes for a stern resistance on the final day suffered a big jolt in the third over of the day when Liton Das got trapped leg-before wicket by Jayawickrama after adding just three runs to his overnight 14.

Mehidy Hasan continue battling alongside the tail but found no support from the other end before getting caught on 39 off Jayawickrama as the ninth batsman and Bangladesh’s final batsman Abu Jayed then departed for a duck in the same over.

Earlier, Sri Lanka posted 493-7d in the first innings thanks to centuries from Lahiru Thirimanne and Dimuth Karunaratne.

Bangladesh got bundled out for only 251 in their reply, handing the hosts a 242-run lead.

Sri Lanka made 194-9d in their second innings to put a mammoth 436-run target in front of Bangladesh, which the tourists fell well short of.

Previously, the first Test ended in a draw, which took place at the same venue on April 21-25.
