Cricketer Nasir, Tamima secure bail

Cricketer Nasir Hossain, Tamima Sultana and her mother Sumi Akter have secured bail after turning themselves in to a Dhaka court on Sunday.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Jashim Das accepted the bail petition on Sunday and set a Tk 10,000 bond in the case over marrying illegally before a previous marriage officially ended.

On September 30, the court issued summons against them after the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI), filed its probe report on charges brought by Tamima’s first husband Rakib Hasan.

The PBI report said that Tamima’s marriage to Nasir is void, since her divorce with Rakib was not valid. The divorce documents that were filed with the marriage registrar’s office were forged, according to it.

On February 24, Rakib filed the case with the court, where he said he and his eight-year-old daughter were severely traumatized due to “such an immoral and illicit relationship” between Tamima and Nasir.

However, the same day, Nasir told a press briefing that they only got married after Tamima’s divorced Rakib.

Tamima, who works as a cabin crew in a foreign airline, said at the media call that she had divorced Rakib in 2017.

“I was married to Rakib, and yes, we have a child together. Everything else that Rakib has said are nothing but lies,” she claimed.

The wedding ceremony of cricketer Nasir and Tamima was held at a restaurant in Uttara on February 14.

After the photos of their marriage went viral on social media, Rakib filed a general diary with Uttara West police station. It says he was married to Tamima for 11 years, they have an eight-year-old daughter from the marriage, and that she had not divorced him.

According to the PBI report, Tamima married Nasir before she was “properly separated" from Rakib.

What the couple said at a press conference about the divorce did not match the “truth”, the investigating agency said, adding that the divorce papers which were presented as “proof” were forged.

Mizanur Rahman, the PBI's investigating officer in the case, filed charges against Nasir, Tamima and her mother Sumi Akter in the case filed by Rakib.

Tamima stands accused of marrying the cricketer without a divorce from her first husband. Nasir has been charged with “seducing another man’s wife”, “adultery” and defaming Tamima’s ex-husband.
