Domingo denies reports of resignation

Russell Domingo denied that he had resigned from his post as Bangladesh head coach and reaffirmed his commitment to the team after reports on Thursday in the country’s various media outlets claimed that the South African had stepped down from his post.

The 47-year-old coach, who is currently staying with his family in South Africa, further said that he would return to his job in October with the Bangladesh ‘A’ team that takes on Afghanistan 'A' team in the UAE.

‘This is to confirm that all the rumours and speculations that I have resigned from the Bangladesh Cricket Board are not true,’ Domingo told his close sources on Thursday.

‘I am trying to get our cricket to where it needs to be in the one-day and Test formats. I will be going to Abu Dhabi in October to work with the A side. I will then join the national team in December.

‘As far as I am concerned, it is business as usual. I will continue the journey that I have started. My contract is till November 2023. I am fully committed to the Bangladesh Cricket Board for the next 15 months,' he added.

Meanwhile, BCB chief executive officer Nizamuddin Chowdhury told the media on Thursday that all this happened due to missed communication, adding that he had a chat with Domingo earlier this morning where the South African expressed his embarrassment in this respect.

‘In fact, we have also been overseeing the issue. I think this happened due to miscommunication. We had a conversion with each other earlier this morning [Thursday],’ said Nizamuddin.

‘I am repeating that I had a chat with him [Domingo] in detail this morning, where Domingo expressed his displeasure regarding the issues. 'He actually said he felt very embarrassed by the things that came out in the media,’ added the BCB CEO.

Earlier this week, Domingo was replaced by former Indian all-rounder Sridharan Sriram as technical consultant for the T20Is with BCB president Nazmul Hasan confirming that the South African will continue as the Tigers' head coach in ODIs and Tests until November 2023.

Domingo was appointed as Tigers head coach in September 2019 following the exit of Steve Rhodes after the debacle in the ICC 2019 World Cup.

Since then, he has played a pivotal role in taking the Bangladesh ODI side into the second position in the World Cup Super League and also won a historic Test in New Zealand in January this year.

However, his records in the T20Is came under scrutiny afterwards after his charges' poor display in the shortest format of the game, where they have suffered 13 losses in their last 15 games, starting with last year’s ICC T20 World Cup and ending with a 1-2 series loss against Zimbabwe last month.
