Iyer and Ashwin guide India to three-wicket win

Bangladesh bowlers’ efforts went in vain after Sheyas Iyer and Ravichandran Ashiwn shared a crucial 71-run stand in the eighth wicket that aided India to earn a thrilling three-wicket win against Bangladesh on the fourth day of the second and final Test at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on Sunday.

Ashwin and Iyer remained unbeaten on 42 and 29 runs respectively to guide the visitors to 145-7 who just needed 100 runs to finish the tie and also clean sweep the hosts by 2-0.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz finished with his ninth five-wicket haul in Tests while Shakib Al Hasan scalped two.

India resumed their innings on 45-4 with their overnight batsmen Axar Patel and Jaydev Unadkat on 26 and 3 runs.

However, the pair could add 11 runs more before the latter was removed by Shakib for a 16-ball 13.

In the next stand Axar and Rishabh Pant shared a 15-run before Mehidy trapped the latter leg before for nine that gave a hint of victory in the hosts’ dressing room.

It further inflated when Mehidy struck once again to dismiss Axar after a valuable 69-ball 34 to complete his ninth five-wicket haul in the longest format of the game as India were shortened to 74-7.

That was the end of efforts from the home side as Ashwin who survived a catch drop by Mominul on one alongside his partner Iyer added 71 runs in the eighth wicket stand to take the side to the shore of the victory in 47 overs.
