Dhaka, Dec 2 (Just News): Off-spinner Mehedi Hasan claimed record 12 wickets in the match to inspire Bangladesh to an innings and 184 runs over West Indies in the second Test in Dhaka inside three days on Sunday.
Mehedi grabbed 5-59 in the second innings after recording a career best 7-58 in the first innings, helping the home side take the two-Test series 2-0 – the first series win for Bangladesh against any side in four years.
West Indies folded for 213 all out in the second innings after they earned the dubious distinction of becoming the first ever side to be asked to follow on by Bangladesh in a Test match.
Mehedi’s haul earlier helped home side bowl out West Indies for 111 runs in the first inning on the same day.
This is the lowest score by any side against Bangladesh lowering Zimbabwe’s 114 in 2014.
Shimron Hetmyer scored an attacking 93 off 92 balls with nine sixes and a four to prevent similar collapse in the second innings.
Mehedi denied Hetmyer his maiden Test century when the batsman’s attempted 10th six ended up as a catch at long-on to Mohammad Mithun.
Mehedi then removed Jomel Warrican to complete his second five-wicket haul in the game before finishing with a match figure of 12-117, the best by any bowler for Bangladesh in a Test match.
Mehedi improved his own record of 12-159 against England in 2016 at the same ground.
Kemar Roach provided a late entertainment with an unbeaten 37 off 49 balls with seven fours, but they could only delay the inevitable.
Taijul Islam wrapped up the innings and match when he trapped Shermon Lewis for 20 to finish with 3-40.
West Indies’ trouble began from the very start of the third day’s play when they lost five wickets in less than one hour in the morning after resuming their first innings on 75-5
Hetmyer, who also top-scored in the first innings with 39, hit Mehedi for a six in the second over of the day, but the off-spinner flummoxed him for a sharp return catch to start the collapse.
Bangladesh never looked back as Mehedi claimed three more wickets in quick time and completed his sixth five-wicket haul in the process before skipper Sakib al Hasan wrapped up the innings to finish with 3-27.
