The day's play is called off on account of rain. After being sent in to bat, Tamim and Shadman started well but the latter lost his way, much like the rest of the team as Bangladesh crumbled to 211 in the face of Neil Wagner and Trent Boult's fiery four-fors. Tamim Iqbal continued his fine form with a third consecutive half-century before falling for 74 and Liton scored a patient 33. Encouragingly, the visiting bowlers made a mark in the short time they had, with Abu Jayed taking two wickets as the hosts were pegged back to 38/2.
Rain has returned to the Basin Reserve and that is hopefully all for the day's play although official confirmation will not be forthcoming anytime soon. Bangladesh have done well with the ball to pull back two wickets, but with Williamson still at the crease, the hosts can expect big things.
8.3 - New Zealand 8/2; Taylor 0 (0), Williamson 1 (11): Jayed strikes again, this time removing Jeet Raval. The batsman scoops it straight to Soumya.
4.6 - New Zealand 5/1; Williamson 0 (0), Raval 1 (14): Jayed gets the breakthrough early, removing last match's centurion Tom Latham for 4.
60.6 - Bangladesh 211 all out: The Tigers add just five runs for their final four wickets as Boult bowls Jayed to bring Bangladesh's innings to a close. Things were looking to be going quite well for the visitors as openers Tamim and Shadman took the team through the first 20 overs without loss. However, things had gotten considerably worse by lunch when Bangladesh reached 127 for three. Wagner did most of the damage, picking up four wickets, including four of the top three batsmen, while Boult came in and wiped out the tail, also finishing with four wickets, including the final three. The only positive at this point for Bangladesh from an innings that had some promise is Tamim's knock. He hit 74, a third consecutive half-century, as he continued his fine form. Hopefully their bowlers can extract something from the pitch, which had a lot to offer to the hosts.
59.5 - Bangladesh 207/9; Ebadot 0 (0), Jayed 0 (0): Liton is out just five balls after the last wicket and Bangladesh are all but done with their first innings. Southee picks up his first wicket as captain Kane Williamson collects the catch at gully.
58.6 - Bangladesh 206/8; Liton 33 (44): It's another double-blow. Mustafizur Rahman manages to survive just one ball before Boult sends him packing with a delivery that strikes timber.
58.4 - Bangladesh 206/7; Liton 33 (44): Taijul Islam is gone. He survives 35 balls and scores8 before Boult traps him in front.
48.5 - Bangladesh 168/6; Liton 5 (19) - Now Riyad goes. His 35 balls yielded 13 runs before Wagner got back into the wickets. He now has four scalps today alone and Bangladesh are out of recognised batsmen.
41.3 - Bangladesh 152/5; Soumya Sarkar is gone, done in by a short ball from Henry. Soumya's pull is skied and comes straight down to wicketkeeper BJ Watling.
36.3 - Bangladesh 134/4; Soumya 5 (4), Mahmudullah 0 (0): Wagner gets his third wicket of the day and removes dangerman Tamim. After a 114-ball 74, Tamim sends a pull high into the air and safely into the waiting arms of Tim Southee.
That brings together Mahmudullah Riyad, the new man in and Soumya Sarkar, the pair who combined for a 235-run stand in the last Test.
Lunch: Bangladesh had made a flying start with Tamim Iqbal and Shadman Islam putting together their third consecutive 50-run partnership. However, while the more experienced opener has been going strong as has been the case this series, the younger one fell shortly after drinks following the 20th over. Mominul came in and forged a 44-run stand, contributing 15 to that before being sent back by Wagner -- who also removed Mohammad Mithun with the last ball before lunch.
34.6 - Bangladesh 127/3; Tamim 72 (109): Mithun (three off 10 balls) falls prey to Wagner, another who was caught behind, as Bangladesh lose a wicket on the final ball before lunch.
32.3 overs - Bangladesh 119/2; Mithun 0 (0), Tamim 67 (104): Mominul departs after a 38-ball 15 and a 44-run partnership with Tamim is broken. He gloved the ball behind to the wicketkeeper.
23.4 overs - Bangladesh 84/1; Tamim 50 (81), Mominul 1 (8): Tamim Iqbal brings up his third consecutive half-century with a single off Matt Henry.
20.4 overs - Bangladesh 75/1; Mominul 0 (0), Tamim Iqbal 46 (71): Shadman falls four falls balls after the drinks break, edging behind a Neil Wagner delivery to slip. de Grandhomme makes the breakthrough.
20 overs – Bangladesh 74/0; Tamim 45 (70), Shadman 27 (50): Bangladesh reach the drinks break at 74 for no loss after a solid start from their openers.
11.4 overs - Bangladesh 50/0; Shadman 19 (34), Tamim 29 (38): Bangladesh bring up their 50 in positive fashion in the 11th over, getting 36 of their runs from boundaries. Tamim Iqbal did the lion's share of the work, with 29 runs that featured six fours -- including a pair of consecutive deliveries from Trent Boult. Shadman is on 19, with three boundaries.
Neil Wagner left the field in the eighth over, but made his way back at the start of the tenth.
Bangladesh were sent in to bat as the second Test at the Basin Reserve finally got underway on the third day.
Tamim Iqbal and Shadman Islam opened the innings for the visitors, whose team featured three changes. Mushfiqur Rahim was not in the team again due to injury while all-rounder Mehedi Hasan Miraz and pacer Khaled Ahmed were dropped. Taijul Islam and Mustafizur Rahman replaced the latter two.
