Bangladesh people should have right to demonstrate peacefully: UN

It is vital that people have a right to demonstrate and demonstrate peacefully, Stéphane Dujarric, spokesperson for the UN secretary-general has said.

He made the remarks while responding to a query regarding Bangladesh government’s crackdown on opposition at the noon briefing in UN headquarters on Friday.

Pointing at the government's attack on opposition, correspondent Mushfiqul Fazal asked “Bangladesh Government is very much attacking the opposition; already thousands arrested and top two leaders, including BNP Secretary General and a standing committee member. And according to the Guardian, seven people have killed. And millions of people are gathered in the capital city, Dhaka, demanding voting rights and democracy. So, is the Secretary-General aware of that? And already, we have seen a statement by the UN Resident Coordinator in Dhaka, and 15 Member State, including the United States and EU [European Union] issued a statement. So, what is your comment?”

In reply, Stéphane Dujarric said, “We, obviously, echo the sentiments expressed by the Resident Coordinator. It is vital that people have a right to demonstrate and demonstrate peacefully and that it is also important that due process be given to all those who may have been detained.”
