The government has information that some members of the police are secretly providing information or otherwise helping ‘fascist forces', home minister Salahuddin Ahmed said on Saturday.
He said there had been incidents of police members failing to perform their duties or neglecting their responsibilities.
The home minister made the remarks while addressing the medal-giving ceremony of Police Week 2026 at the Rajarbagh Police Auditorium in Dhaka.
‘I want to give one message to everyone from the grassroots level to the inspector general of police that police have to be strict to maintain discipline and fulfil public expectations,’ he said.
‘Action is gradually being taken, while police members are being given opportunities to correct themselves,’ he said.
The minister said police personnel who help arrest associates of the activity banned Awami League would be rewarded.
‘Those who can bring associates of the fascist forces and the Awami League to justice will be rewarded,’ he said.
He mentioned that two ‘strong associates’ of the ‘fascist forces’ had been arrested last week and another was arrested the previous day.
‘They had been hiding here all this time. Where was our intelligence support?’ he asked.
The minister said the previous government had misused the police and used the force for political purposes and against the people.
‘People do not want to see the police as emperors. They want people-friendly police,’ he added.
He also mentioned that a separate cyber security unit would be formed within the police next week, with branches at metropolitan, divisional and district levels.
