AL created many Aziz, Benazir in 15 years: BNP

The main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Wednesday said that the ruling Awami League in the past 15 years created many people like former army chief Aziz Ahmed and former police chief Benazir Ahmed who were now facing massive corruption allegations.

‘Awami League has produced many Benazir and Aziz in the country. Their job is to loot, smuggle and exploit,’ BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said at a discussion at the Engineering Institution, Bangladesh in the capital.

BNP organised the discussion marking the 43rd death anniversary of the party founder Ziaur Rahman.

The Awami League is afraid to give neutral elections because they know that if the election is neutral, they will not get even 10 per cent votes, Fakhrul said, adding that the party could not win people’s hearts even in 15 years.

Fakhrul also said that the Baksal was introduced in just 11 minutes and it was compulsory for everyone, including police and army, to join the Baksal.

‘Still, Ziaur Rahman did not join Baksal. From there, Ziaur Rahman brought back multi-party democracy. After that Awami League was reborn,’ he said.

He said that in the ongoing crisis of national life, people must move ahead following the path and ideals shown by Zia and build steel-solid mass unity to safeguard the national interest, multi-dimensional democracy and people’s rights.

Referring to a weekly newspaper published form New York, Fakhrul said that on the day of the killing of Ziaur Rahman, silence descended on the alleys of Dhaka city and a shadow of mourning gripped the entire country.

‘Army personnel did not follow any protocol on the day his [Zia] body was brought to Dhaka. They were overwhelmed. Everyone was in tears,’ he said.

Fakhrul also rejected a recent claim by Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader that Ziaur Rahman had joined Baksal.

‘It’s a lie,’ he said.

Talking about former police chief Benazir Ahmed and army chief Aziz Ahmed issue, Fakhrul said that Benazir was made police chief by the Awami League despite the United Nations sanctions.

‘Not one Aziz, not one Benazir, thousands of Aziz, Benazir have been created by this Awami League. They have become looters. The country has been left empty by money smuggling and looting,’ he said.

He said that the parliamentary democracy was introduced in this country by BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia as she introduced the caretaker government system showing respect to the common people.

Presided over by BNP vice chairman Hafiz Uddin Ahmed and moderated by its publicity secretary Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anee, BNP standing committee member Mirza Abbas, Abdul Moyeen Khan and Nazrul Islam Khan, vice chairmen Abdul Awal Mintoo, Abdullah Al Noman, AZM Zahid Hossain and Shamsuzzaman Dudu, and Dhaka Metropolitan South unit BNP convener Abdus Salam spoke the programme, among others.
