Ex-IGP Benazir worked to keep AL in power: BNP

The main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party said on Wednesday that former inspector general of police Benazir Ahmed used all his powers to protect the Awami League and keep them in power.

‘Benazir did everything for the Awami League... now the party says that he is not their man,’ BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said while addressing a discussion at the National Press Club.

Fakhrul was referring to the ruling Awami League statement disowning the former police chief.

Jatiyatabadi Ulema Dal organised the discussion on the occasion of the 43rd death anniversary of BNP founder Ziaur Rahman.

Fakhrul expressed surprise at Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader’s comments about Benazir Ahmed and said that Benazir was the head of the police and the head of RAB.

‘When his [Benazir] infamy, theft, and corruption are coming out in newspapers, the general secretary of the Awami League said he was involved with the Awami League,’ Fakhrul said.

‘He [Benazir] was director general of RAB during the election. Then he openly sought votes for that government party,’ Fakhrul said.

‘He [Benazir] oppressed and tortured the opposition, unlawfully killed, disappeared, and filed false cases against the opposition people. The fictitious case was ready during Benazir’s tenure,’ Fakhrul said.

Fakhrul also spoke about former army chief Aziz Ahmed in the meeting.

‘The two brothers of the former army chief, Aziz Ahmed, were known as terrorists. Yet he was appointed as the army chief. Then they [the Awami League] passed the election,’ Fakhrul said.

‘Those who were our protectors are now the eaters. The picture of their corruption is terrible,’ he said, adding that corruption has become a law in the country.
