Dhaka University has formed a three-member committee to examine allegations that some of its teachers were involved in “secret activities against the state”, according to a press release issued by the DU Public Relations Office today.
The committee, headed by Pro-Vice Chancellor (Education) Prof Dr Abdus Salam, will examine the allegations against the teachers and recommend necessary action, the release said.
The other members of the committee are Md Mufazzal Hossain, dean of the Faculty of Science, and Muhammad Ekramul Haque, dean of the Faculty of Law.
The committee has already begun its activities, it said.
According to the press release, the university recently came across media reports alleging that 404 teachers from 22 universities were involved in “secret activities” aimed at bringing ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina back to the country and activating a political party whose activities are currently banned.
The report allegedly identified 92 DU teachers as being involved in such activities, the press release said.
Of the 92, the university has so far identified 58 teachers, it said.
“The committee will examine the cases of the identified teachers and make necessary recommendations. If any additional names emerge, their cases will also be reviewed and recommendations made accordingly,” the release said.
The university, however, did not disclose the names of the 58 teachers.
