Former cantonment police station officer-in-charge Md Rakibul Hasan, who was withdrawn following the circulation of an audio recording on social media, was arrested on Thursday in a sedition case.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police additional commissioner (Detective Branch) Shafiqul Islam confirmed the matter, saying Rakibul was taken to court on Thursday night.
Rakibul was withdrawn from cantonment police station on September 17 after an audio recording allegedly featuring him went viral on social media.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police said at the time that he was withdrawn for administrative reasons and attached to its headquarters.
In the recording, a person purportedly speaking as Rakibul discussed the possible return of ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and claimed that police on the streets would be unable to prevent anything if she returned.
