Dhaka mayoral polls: NCP announces Asif, Patwary as candidates

National Citizen Party convener and opposition chief whip Nahid Islam on Sunday announced Nasiruddin Patwary and Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain as the party’s potential mayoral candidates for Dhaka South and North city corporations respectively.

He made the announcement at a meeting with potential councillor candidates from different wards of the two city corporations at the NCP office in the Dhaka city.

Nahid also gave organisational directives to prepare for the city polls, including identifying potential councillor candidates and addressing ward-level civic rights.

He instructed party leaders and potential candidates to remain connected with the families of July martyrs and those injured during the July uprising, and to closely monitor subversive activities at the ward level by the ‘fallen and fugitive’ Awami League, activities of which are now banned for atrocities during the 2024 July-August mass uprising.

The meeting also discussed the broader political situation in Dhaka and plans to build movements pressing for civic issues.

NCP’s potential mayoral candidates Nasiruddin Patwari and Asif Mahmud, Dhaka North city unit convener and senior joint convener of the party Ariful Islam Adeeb, and Dhaka South city unit convener Ishak Sarker were, among others, present at the meeting.

On August 26, the chief election commissioner, ANM Nasir Uddin, said that the Election Commission intends to begin local government elections with the Union Parishad polls towards the end of the year.
