Historic win over Australia matter of great pride for Bangladesh cricket: PM

Prime minister Tarique Rahman has congratulated the Bangladesh national cricket team on their historic nine-wicket victory over Australia in the first Test of the series in Darwin on Sunday.

“Bangladesh’s historic victory over a strong team like Australia on their own soil is a matter of great pride for the country’s cricket,” he said.

After the match, the prime minister spoke to the players over a video call and congratulated them on the landmark victory.

He also conveyed greetings to the team on behalf of the people of Bangladesh.

He said the remarkable success was the result of the players’ strong determination, confidence, skill and collective effort.

Bangladesh secured the historic victory in their first Test in Australia in 23 years, defeating the hosts by nine wickets in the series opener.

The prime minister was travelling through Kishoreganj when Bangladesh sealed the historic win.

He congratulated the players, coaching staff and all others associated with the team, and expressed hope that Bangladesh would maintain their strong performance in the second Test and turn their prospect of winning the series into reality.

Bangladesh had previously defeated Australia in a Test at Mirpur in 2017.

Sunday’s victory, however, marked their first Test win over Australia on Australian soil.
