The Anti-Corruption Commission has summoned former army chief General SM Shafiuddin Ahmed for questioning over allegations that he acquired wealth through various graft and irregularities.
Shafiuddin has been asked to appear at the ACC headquarters in Segunbagicha, Dhaka, at 12:30pm on September 14 to give his statement, ACC deputy director for public relations Aktarul Islam said on Sunday.
An ACC notice, signed by its director Md Abul Hasnat, was sent to Shafiuddin’s current address in Mirpur DOHS, asking him to appear with a photocopy of his national identity card.
The notice said that, in the interest of a proper inquiry, it was ‘essential’ to hear and record his statement regarding the allegations.
According to the notice, the ACC began its inquiry into the allegations against Shafiuddin on December 14, 2025. A team led by ACC director Abul Hasnat is currently conducting the inquiry.
ACC officials said that the allegations against the former army chief were still at the inquiry stage and that the team would submit a report to the commission after completing its investigation.
‘If evidence supporting the allegations is found, the commission may decide to file a case. If the allegations are not substantiated, the inquiry may be closed,’ they said.
Shafiuddin became chief of the Bangladesh Army on June 24, 2021, succeeding General Aziz Ahmed. He retired on June 23, 2024, after serving as army chief for three years during the Awami League government.
Former army chief Aziz Ahmed is also facing an ACC inquiry over allegations of corruption.
After the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government amid the student-led mass uprising on August 5, 2024, the ACC initiated inquiries into allegations of illegal wealth, money laundering and abuse of power against several former military and security officials.
Cases have also been filed against some former officials, including former lawmaker and retired lieutenant general Masud Uddin Chowdhury.
