A Dhaka court on Saturday placed former lawmaker major (retd) Akhtaruzzaman on one-day remand in a case filed over an incident at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.
Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Al Biruni Mir passed the order after Airport Police Station sub-inspector Majedul Islam, also the investigation officer of the case, produced Akhtaruzzaman before the court seeking five days’ remand, according to court sources.
In the remand plea, the investigation officer said that Akhtaruzzaman needed to be questioned in custody to determine whether any vested quarter had provoked the incident with an intention to tarnish the country’s image.
On Friday, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police Detective Branch arrested Akhtaruzzaman, a leader of the opposition Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, from the Cantonment area in the capital.
Airport security officer Md Shahriar Alam Sajib filed the case with Airport Police Station early Friday, accusing Akhtaruzzaman of obstructing government officials, assaulting a security officer and creating a disturbance at the airport.
Meanwhile, a Dhaka court directed police to submit a report by November 10.
Akhtaruzzaman is a two-time former Bangladesh Nationalist Party lawmaker from the Kishoreganj-2 constituency.
He joined Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami in December 2025, ahead of the 13th National Parliament election.
According to the case statement, passengers arriving from Madinah on Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight BG-338 faced a shortage of luggage trolleys and delays in receiving their baggage at belt 8 at around 10:40 am amid heavy passenger pressure.
As passengers became agitated, Dhaka-5 lawmaker Mohammad Kamal Hossain called airport executive director group captain SM Ragib Samad to the spot to bring the situation under control.
The case statement alleged that Akhtaruzzaman then approached the executive director aggressively, used abusive language and threatened to assault him and remove him from the airport by holding him by the neck.
It also alleged that protocol assistants accompanying Akhtaruzzaman recorded videos on their mobile phones inside a restricted key-point installation area.
