At least 15 labourers, sleeping near the road, have been crushed to death by a truck at Surat in the west Indian state of Gujarat.

The incident took place early Tuesday near Kosamba village, around 60km from Surat, reports NDTV citing police.

A dumper truck ran over the sleeping labourers on the Kim-Mandvi road killing 12 on the spot.

Some injured labourers were taken to a nearby hospital.

Three of the eight injured died during treatment taking the total fatalities to 15, police said.

All the victims were from Banswada in Rajasthan.

"A truck collided with a tractor loaded with sugarcane after which the truck driver lost control of the vehicle and drove it over the pavement where the labourers were sleeping," CM Jadeja, deputy superintendent of police, Kamrej Division, Surat told news agency ANI.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief at the incident and his office tweeted: "The loss of lives due to a truck accident in Surat is tragic. My thoughts are with the bereaved families. Praying that the injured recover at the earliest."
