Parents of the ninth grader who was arrested on Saturday under the Digital Security Act for allegedly defaming Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in a Facebook post, have apologised for their son's mistake and sought his release.
"We are apologising for his mistake and imploring the government to release him considering his age," said father of the arrestee.
On Saturday, police arrested the 14-year-old and sent him to the Juvenile Correction Centre in Gazipur following a case filed against him with Bhaluka Police Station under DSA on charge of posting a defamatory status against the PM.
The minor's father, who is a farmer by profession, said their hope to educate their son had been shattered following the arrest.
Offering an apology on behalf of the boy, his mother said her son posted on his Facebook on Friday but realised his mistake and made another apology post soon after. But this was not taken into consideration.
She urged the government to accept the apology and release her son.
Earlier on Friday, the boy had allegedly posted a status on Facebook criticising the government move to increase tax on mobile call rate.
As the status went viral, Hanif Mohammad Nipun, secretary of Hobirbari union Jubo League, filed a case against the boy under DSA the following day.
