Pubali Bank ATM Heists: 2 fraudsters held in Chittagong

The police have arrested two fraudsters in connection with stealing over Tk9 lakh from ATM booths of Pubali Bank in Chittagong and Comilla.

The fraudsters identified as Shariful Islam, 34 and Mohiuddin Monir, 30, were nabbed from Agrabad area under Double Mooring police station in Chittagong city on Tuesday evening.

Speaking at a press briefing on Wednesday, Deputy Commissioner (West) of Chittagong Metropolitan Police Faruqul Haque said that the arrestees were members of fraud gang involved with stealing money from the ATM booths with cloned credit cards.

Police seized cloned debit and credit cards, card cloning devices, keys to open the ATM booths, a locally-made firearm and a knife from their possession.

The fraudsters stole over Tk6 lakh from two ATMs of Pubali Bank in the port city’s Chawkbazar and Double Mooring and the rest from another in Comilla.

According to a GD filed with Chawkbazar Police Station by Minhaz Uddin Sarwar, manager of Pubali Bank’s College Road branch, the fraudsters stole Tk3.34 lakh from the College Road booth of the bank between 6pm and 7pm on November 17, 2019.

Agrabad Sheikh Pubali Bank’s Mujib Road branch manager Shahed Ali in another GD with Double Mooring police station said Tk3.1 lakh was stolen from the Mujib Road branch booth between 8:30pm and 9:30pm on November 17.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s news portal had published a video obtained from the CCTV footage at the Pubali Bank ATM booth in Comilla.

In the video, two people were seen stealing money from the ATM by opening a part of the machine and planting a device in it to install malware software.
