Prime accused DU student’s murder case arrested from Bogra

Police have arrested two more people for their alleged involvement in the Dhaka University student Sumaiya’s murder case in Natore.

The prime accused in the case, Mostak Hossain, Sumaiya’s husband and alleged killer, was arrested from Bogra’s Nandigram, while his father Jakir Hossain was arrested from Rajshahi’s Bagha three days after the murder took place, police say.

“The husband and in-laws of Sumaiya were on the run after the murder and we were making drives in different areas to arrest them,” said Superintendent of Police Liton Kumar Saha on Thursday noon.

“We were able to arrest her mother-in-law Maleka Akter and sister-in-law Zakia Yasmin Jui on Tuesday, and the two men have been arrested on Thursday,” added the OC.

“We made a plea to the court to grant us a 7-day-remand to question the accused four and to go forward with the case,” said Investigation Officer of the case Abdul Matin.

“We hope to receive the court orders by next Sunday,” added the officer.

Sumaiya Khatun , 26, a master's degree student of Islamic Studies department at DU, was found hanging from the ceiling at her father-in-law's house at Harishpur Baganbari in Natore Sadar upazila on Sunday night.

Police arrested her mother-in-law Maleka and sister-in-law Jui soon after the victim's mother Nuzhat Sultana filed a murder case last night in connection with the incident.

Earlier, Sumaiya wanted to leave her in-law’s place in Natore Sadar’s Harispur Baganbari and come to Dhaka for civil service exam coaching.

But her husband's family did not agree with what Sumaiya wanted to do. They started insisting that Sumaiya drop her dreams. When the family failed to do that, they began torturing Sumaiya which resulted in her tragic death on Monday, said Sumaiya's family.
