Bangladesh confirmed 43 more deaths of COVID-19 and 3,809 new infections in the 24 hours until 8:00 am on Sunday.
The new figures took the death tally to 1,738 and the total number of infection to 1,37,787 since the disease emerged on March 8.
‘We pay our respect to those, especially the healthcare worker, who are fighting the coronavirus from the frontline,’ said Nasima Sultana, health services additional director general, at a regular online briefing.
She said that 1,409 people recovered in the 24 hours taking the total number of COVID-19 survivor to 55,727.
She said that the infection rate stayed 21.05 per cent of tests conducted in the 24 hours. A total of 18,099 samples were tested at 65 laboratories during the time.
She said that the death rate remained 1.26 per cent of infection.
Of the newly deceased, the highest number of 13 were aged between 51 and 60 while 12 were aged between 61 and 70, seven between 41 and 50, seven others between 71 and 80, two between 21 and 30 one between 31 and 40 and another between 81 and 90.
Of the newly deceased, 21 are from Dhaka division, 10 from Chattogram division, three each from Khulna and Sylhet divisions, two each from Barishal and Rajshahi divisions, and one each from Rangpur and Mymensignh divisions.
Nasima said that 30 people died at hospitals while 10 at their homes and another one on the way to hospital.
The first COVID-19 patient died in Bangladesh on March 18.
For about a month after the emergence of the disease, very low number of daily tests downplayed the spread of the virus.
After the tests increased, Bangladesh soon found its place among the 20 worst countries. Bangladesh is currently the 17th worst COVID-19 hit country in the world.
