Bangladesh Public Service Commission (BPSC) has said it would follow the government decision to conduct Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) recruitment procedure, eliminating the existing quota system.
The BPSC took the decision two years after the government decision on the same matter at a meeting on Tuesday while publishing the 38th BCS results.
On October 3, 2018, the government issued a circular to abolish the quota system for recruitment in the ninth to thirteenth grades of government jobs (formerly known as first and second class jobs).
Later on July 30, 2019, in another circular, the government stated that there would be no quota for first and second class posts (9th to 13th).
In addition to clarifying the previous circular on quotas issued on January 20, 2020, the Ministry of Public Administration also approved a proposal to abolish quotas on direct appointments to eighth grade or higher posts in government jobs.
The government took the decision despite the demands made by the non-political student movement urging to maintain the quota system. The BPSC circulated the 40th BCS recruitment notification on September 11, 2018, along that decision.
On July 25, 2019, a total of 20,277 candidates qualified in the 40th BCS preliminary tests out of 4,12,532 candidates who sat for the exam held on May 3. The candidates who took part in the written test of this BCS are now waiting for the results.
However, BPSC Chairman Chairman Mohammad Sadiq told Dhaka Tribune on Wednesday: “It was a settled issue when the government finalized the decision.
“Besides, during the circular of the 40th BCS, we said that the latest quota policy of the government would be followed while publishing the results. This has already been clarified. And the 38th BCS was the last recruitment process with the quota facility,” he added.
