Bangladesh business tycoon Latifur Rahman dies

Transcom Group chairman Latifur Rahman died at his village home in Cumilla’s Chauddagram on Wednesday.

Latifur, 75, left behind wife, son, two daughters and host of well-wishers to mourn his death.

Confirming his death Transcom Group director Fakhruzzaman said that the country’s leading businessman died about 11:30am.

His body is being taken to Dhaka and his namaz-e-janaza will be held at Gulshan Azad Mosque after Esa prayer, said Fakhruzzaman.

He will be buried at Banani graveyard.

Latifur Rahman was the chairman of Transcom Group that owns Mediastar Ltd and Mediaworld Ltd, the publishing companies of daily Prothom Alo and Daily Star respectively.

He was born on August 28, 1945 in Jalpaiguri. India.

He was raised in Gendaria, Dhaka. He went to St. Francis School in Dhaka and later he studied in St. Edmund’s School in Shillong and Saint Javier’s College in Kolkata from 1956 and returned to Dhaka in 1965.

He started his career as a trainee in W. Rahman Jute Mills in 1966 and joined there as an executive after one-and-half-year. He worked at the mill until 1971.

He started his business career in 1972. His company Transcom Group currently employs 10,000 people, according to daily Prothom Alo. He received Business for Peace award, regarded as Nobel prize for business professionals, in 2012.
