Bangladesh has crossed the grim 200,000 mark in the confirmed cases of coronavirus with 2,709 people having tested positive in the last 24 hours.
With this development, the number of total confirmed cases jumped to 202,066.
Meanwhile, the death toll from the coronavirus infection has reached 2,581 in the country as 34 more people died of the deadly virus in the past 24 hours.
Additional Director General (Administration) of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), Prof Nasima Sultana, revealed the latest figures from Dhaka on Saturday afternoon, in a daily online bulletin on the Covid-19 situation.
She said, of the 34 deceased, including 29 men, the highest figure of 14 was from Dhaka division, six from Khulna, five from Rajshahi , four from Sylhet, three from Chittagong, and one each from Barisal and Mymensingh divisions.
So far, 2,040 (79.04%) men and 541 (20.96%) women have died from Covid-19 across the country.
The mortality rate against the total number of cases detected so far stands at 1.28%.
The DGHS official said that 10,632 samples were collected from suspected Covid-19 patients between Friday and Saturday mornings.
As many as 10,923 samples were tested in the authorized labs across the country and 2,709 new patients were confirmed.
However, the latest figures depict an infection rate of 24.80%.
Till date, no fewer than 1,017,674 tests have been conducted in the country, leading to a whopping 19.86% infection rate as of yet.
Prof Nasima said 1,373 people recovered from the disease over the preceding 24 hours.
So far, a total of 110,098 patients — 54.49% of all infected — have made full recovery across the country.
On March 8, health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a new coronavirus strain which was later named Sars-CoV-2.
The novel coronavirus had broken out in China's Wuhan city in late December last year and quickly spread throughout the world, becoming a pandemic in less than three months.
The fast-spreading coronavirus has claimed 599,825 lives and infected 14,211,635 people across the world till 3:10pm on Saturday, according to Worldometer.
As many as 8,484,743 people have recovered from Covid-19 which has spread to 213 countries and territories across the planet.
