Petitions filed for issuing arrest warrant against Shahed

Three petitions have been filed to a Dhaka court for issuing arrest warrant against Regent Group Chairman Mohammad Shahed for the misappropriation of Tk4.05 crore.

Advocate Monir Hossain, a lawyer of the complainant, submitted the petitions to Metropolitan Magistrate Court-23 of Dhaka for showing him arrested in the cases and producing Shahed before it on August 13, the next scheduled date.

Bench Officer Md Mostafa Kamal of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court number 23 confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune.

Monir Hossain told the court that Shahed was arrested from Satkhira on July 15 when he was trying to flee the country on a boat. He was later placed on a 10-day remand in a case filed over issuing fake Covid-19 certificates.

After the hearing, Metropolitan Magistrate Md Habibur Rahman Chowdhury asked the lawyer to provide details on when Shahed was arrested and where he is now.

The court kept the petitions in the case files and will pass an order on the matters after the lawyers provide the information.

On July 13, Saifullah Masud, proprietor of M/S Masud Enterprise in Karwanbazar, filed the cases against Shahed for his alleged involvement with the embezzlement.

Another magistrate issued arrest warrants against Shahed on the same day, directing the officer-in-charge of Uttara West Police Station to submit a report on execution of the arrest warrants by August 13.

In the first case, Saifullah told the court that Shahed bought iron rods and cement worth Tk1 crore from his shop between January 18 and March 24 of 2018. Shahed issued four cheques to Saifullah but told him not to cash those without his permission.

On June 25, 2020, Saifullah requested Shahed to pay his dues. But Shahed threatened him with dire consequences if he forced the issue.

In the second case, the plaintiff said he supplied iron rods and cement worth Tk2.68 crore to Shahed between 2018 and March 2020.

When Saifullah asked for the money over the phone on July 8, Shahed refused to pay, leading him to lodge a general diary with Uttara West Police Station on the same day.

The third case was filed by Nazrul Islam on July 19 on account of Shahed failing to pay Tk37 lakh owed to the plaintiff.

A magistrate issues arrest warrants against Shahed, asking for a report on the execution of the warrant by August 18.
