Jessore juvenile correctional centre torture victim Parvez requested rescue before death

Facing severe punishments by the juvenile correctional officers in Jessore, 16-year-old inmate Parvez Hasan Rabbi asked his father to rescue him a week before his death, according to Parvez's father Roka Miah.

Parvez even asked for a counterfeit document certifying a fake age is used to move him to prison instead of the correctional centre, Roka said.

Quoting phone conversations with Parvez, Roka said: "The correctional centre was irregular in serving food to the inmates. Boys were often tortured when they were hungry. A few weeks ago, arguments broke out about the matter between correctional centre authorities and a few other inmates including Parvez. Afterwards, inmates loyal to the correctional centre officials ganged up and had beaten them"

"When the inmates were on scheduled phone calls with their family members, there were people hearing the conversations. The inmates were punished later if they said something unwanted on the calls,” Roka added.

Previously on Saturday, a police investigation found five of the juvenile correctional officers responsible for torturing three boys including Parvez to death.

The five correctional officials are: Abdullah Al Masud, the superintendent of the correctional centre; Masum Billah, assistant superintendent; Mushfiq Ahmed, probation officer; Shahnur Rahman, physical instructor; and Faruk Hossain, technical instructor.

The torture at the juvenile correctional centre included repeatedly beating the boys unconscious with no medical attention to speak of. Seven other inmates loyal to the officers helped carry out the brutality that resulted in the three deaths.

The two other deceased victims of the torture were identified as Rasel alias Sujon, 18 and Nayeem Hossain, 17.

Families of all three victims demanded exemplary punishment for the people involved in the murder.

A charge-sheet was submitted against Parvez last year, after he was accused in a murder case filed at Daulatpur police station in Khulna.

He was kept at the correctional centre, after being sentenced, for a period of about nine months due to being under aged.

Nayeem and Sujon, the other two victims of the torture were accused in rape cases.

Nayeem was accused in a rape and murder case filed with Shibganj police station.

Whereas, Sujon was accused in a rape case filed on 23 October 2015. He was sentenced to 25 years’ imprisonment for the crime.
