Around 13,738 houses and 12,863 hectares of crops have been damaged by recent floods in seven upazilas and eight municipalities of Jamalpur district, causing thousands of people to suffer.
According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) the second phase of floods hit the district on July 9 and lasted till August 6. The flood, during this period, submerged 12,863 hectares of land of various crops in all the seven upazilas of the district.
The flood has affected 9,94,707 farmers in the districts by damaging their standing crops, a DAE official said.
The second phase flood has damaged standing crops on 12,863 hectares of land, causing production losses of crops worth Tk96.77 crore this season in the district.
The flood damaged T-Aman seed beds worth Tk15.17 crore.
The flood also damaged Aush rice worth Tk29.74 crore, jute worth Tk29.34 crore, vegetable worth Tk16.78 crore, maize worth Tk11.55 lakh, green chili worth Tk3.56 crore, sugarcane worth Tk27.50 lakh, banana worth Tk1.74 crore and sesame worth Tk3.24 lakh.
The first phase of the flood that hit on June 27 damaged crops of Tk43.52 crore.
District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer Nayeb Ali said a total of 386 houses have been eroded completely by the Jamuna River. Flood waters also damaged 13,738 houses, 66 kilometres of earthen roads, 23km carpeted roads, 4km flood protection dam, five bridges, 177 educational institutions, 3,690 tube wells, 3,848 latrines, 569 mosques and madrasas and nine temples.
At least 25 people died in flood water this year.
Deputy Director of DAE Md Aminul Islam said post flood rehabilitation program for agriculture are being implemented to recoup the loss caused by the flood in the district.
Deputy Commissioner Enamul Haque said the concerned department has been informed about the damages.
The DAE will take steps soon to recoup the losses, he added.
