Shipra Rani Debnath, a student of Stamford University’s film and media studies department and a crew member of slain major (retd) Sinha Md Rashed Khan, failed to file a case against two superintendents of police and 150 others under the Digital Security Act at Cox's Bazar Sadar Model police station on charge of circulating her private photos on social media.
Md Khairuzzaman, officer-in-charge of the police station, did not take the case and instead suggested that Shipra file it with Ramu police station or with the cyber-crimes tribunal, Shipra's lawyer Mahbubul Alam Tipu told reporters in front of the police station Tuesday night.
Mostafijur Rahman, SP of Satkhira, and Md Mizanur Rahman Shelley, SP (Dhaka Metro -- South) of the Police Bureau of Investigation, will be made accused in the case along with 100-150 others, said the lawyer.
Shipra was defamed as her personal photos were doctored and posted on different social media sites, including Youtube. She, therefore, came to file the case under sections 19, 25, and 29 of the DSA, the lawyer said.
"But OC Khairuzzaman recommended that we file the case with Ramu police station as that is the area where Shipra said her personal data was leaked from, after she was arrested by Ramu police in
Himchhari along with her personal effects following major Sinha's death," the lawyer also said.
"The OC also suggested that we may file the case with the cyber-crimes tribunal," he added.
Shipra and another Stamford student Shahadul Islam Sefat were also present with their lawyer but did not wish to speak to journalists on account of being distraught.
Earlier in a video statement on Monday, Shipra vowed to file cases under the Digital Security Act against police officials and others who circulated her private photos on social media.
