Jubo League leader among 2 held in attack on UNO

Law enforcement agencies have detained five individuals including the key accused and a leader of Awami Jubo League in a case filed over the recent attack on Wahida Khanam, the upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) of Ghoraghat in Dinajpur.

The detainees are, Jahangir Alam, 40, convener of Ghoraghat Upazila unit Jubo League, Asadul Haque, 38, member of the same upazila unit Jubo League, Masud Rana, 40, president of Singra union unit Jubo League, Nahid Hossain Polash, the night guard at UNO’s official residence, and Md Nabirul, a painter from Chokbamunia village.

Confirming the matter, Hakimpur police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ferdaus Wahid said Asadul was detained from Hakimpur upazila and Jahangir detained from Ghoraghat early Friday during a drive conducted by a joint team of Dinajpur police and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).

Asadul, the key accused and his accomplice Jahangir have multiple prior allegations including assault, extortion and drug abuse filed against them with the district unit Jubo League, said Nirup Saha, joint convener of Ghoraghat Upazila unit Jubo League.

Speaking on the matter, Dinajpur 6 MP Shibli Sadique said he had personally written a letter to the district unit Jubo League for the duo’s expulsion for abusing their political influence.

Both Asadul and Jahangir have been taken to the RAB office in Rangpur, OC Ferdous said.

Earlier on Thursday night, law enforcement agencies detained Masud and Polash for questioning regarding the attack.

Meanwhile, UNO Wahida's elder brother Farid Hossain filed a case against unidentified individuals at Ghoraghat police station in the early hours of Friday, Ghoraghat OC Amirul Islam confirmed.

Wahida Khanam was severely injured in an attack by unknown miscreants at her government residence early on Thursday.

According to local sources, the attackers broke into Wahida's house through a window and started attacking Wahida.

Her father Omar Ali was also gravely injured when he tried to stop the attackers and rescue his daughter.

Wahida and her father were first taken to Rangpur Medical College Hospital. The UNO was later moved to the ICU of Rangpur Community Medical College Hospital.

As her condition was critical, the UNO was airlifted to Dhaka by a Bangladesh Air Force helicopter in the afternoon and admitted to the National Institute of Neurosciences and Hospital in Agargaon.
