Bangladesh takes Rohingya leaders to Bhasan Char

Authorities in Bangladesh said on Saturday they have taken a group of 40 Rohingya community leaders to Bhasan Char Island in order to convince them for planned relocation.

The Rohingya community leaders, locally known as Majhi, will see the arrangement made by the Bangladesh government for the refugees in the island, said Bangladesh's Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner Mahbub Alam Talukder.

‘We are taking to Bhasan Char as part of our go and see programme. Hopefully, they will be able to convince the other Rohingyas,’ he said.

Noakhali deputy commissioner Khurshed Alam Khan said Rohingya leaders would return to the camp on September 8.

Bangladesh planned to shift about 100,000 Rohingyas to Bhasan Char from their camps in Cox’s Bazar.

However, the plan did not materialise yet as UN and rights groups opposed it.

Bangladesh Navy built 1,440 housing structures to shelter some 100,000 people on the island, as a part of a Bangladesh government project.

In May, some 300 Rohingyas, who were stranded at sea for several weeks, were rescued by Navy and taken to the island.
