Sagar-Runi murder: Probe report delayed for the 74th time

The submission date for the probe report of the Sagar-Runi murder case has been deferred for the 74th time.

A Dhaka court on Tuesday fixed September 14 for submission of the probe report in the murder case of journalist duo Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Millat Hossain set the date after Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) failed to file the probe report of the case, said Sub-Inspector Asaduzzaman, general recording officer at the court for Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police station, reports Bangla Tribune.

Till now, the Sagar-Runi murder trial probe report has been deferred 74 times.

On February 12, 2012, Maasranga Television News Editor Sagar Sarowar and ATN Bangla Senior Reporter Meherun Runi were stabbed to death in the bedroom of their apartment in Dhaka’s West Razabazar neighbourhood.

So far, eight people, including the couple’s friend Tanvir Rahman, have been accused in the murder.

The others convicted are two security guards of the couple’s house Enamul alias Humayun Kabir and Palash Rudra Pal, along with Rafiqul Islam, Bakul Miah, Mintu alias Bargira Mintu alias Masum Mintu, Kamrul Hasan Arun, and Abu Sayeed. Though the convicts have been remanded several times, none of them have confessed to their involvement in the crime.

Different courts have expressed dissatisfaction over the investigation on several occasions. The murder triggered widespread outrage in the journalist community.
