4 more accused give confessional statements

Four accused in the Major (retd) Sinha murder case were giving confessional statements in front of a Cox's Bazar court today, following the end of their second-phase remand of four days each by Rapid Action Battalion.

They were produced in the court of Cox's Bazar Sadar-4 Senior Judicial Magistrate Tamanna Farah around 11am, reports our local correspondent quoting senior ASP of Rab, Khairul Islam, who is also the investigation officer of the case.

The four are ASI Liton Mia and three constables -- Safanur Karim, Kamal Hosen and Abdullah Al Mamun.

They were taken to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital around 10:00am in the morning for health check-up from Rab custody, said Dr Shaheen Md Abdur Rahman, resident doctor of the hospital.

With the four, 12 accused in the case have so far given confessional statement. Pradeep Kumar Das, former officer-in-charge of Teknaf Police Station is the only accused in the case who has not yet confessed to the crimes.

On the night of July 31, Maj (retd) Sinha was returning to Cox's Bazar from Teknaf. His car was stopped at Shaplapur on Marine Drive.

Police claimed that they tried to search the vehicle, and Sinha aimed his pistol at them prompting them to shoot back in self-defence. They also claimed that they seized drugs from the vehicle.

However, witnesses gave a different account of the incident. They said Sinha got down from his car, put his hands over his head, and then police shot him.

Sinha's elder sister Sharmin Shahriar Ferdous filed a case on August 5 with Teknaf Senior Judicial Magistrate Court regarding the incident.
