Ghoraghat OC withdrawn for negligence in duty

Amirul Islam, officer-in-charge of Ghoraghat police station, has been withdrawn for his dereliction of duty on the night of the attack on Wahida Khanam, upazila nirbahi officer of Ghoraghat upazila in Dinajpur.

The accused police officer was attached to Dinajpur Police Lines on Friday morning, confirmed Dinajpur Superintendent of Police Anwar Hossain.

He said: “Rangpur Sadar police station Inspector Azim Uddin has replaced Amirul Islam as the new officer-in-charge of Ghoraghat police station.”

According to police sources, the withdrawal order against Amirul comes after questions were raised about his inability to maintain law and order, and the absence of a police patrol in the area, on the night of the attack on UNO Wahida Khanam.

Previously, a Nawabganj upazila nirbahi officer was similarly attacked at his residence when Amirul was assigned to Nawabganj police station.

DB police detained two more suspects for interrogation Friday morning.

The detainees Minarul and Humaiyun, both workers at a mosque that is under construction at the upazila council chattar, have been taken to the district headquarters.

Meanwhile, Nabirul Islam and Santu Kumar, two accused in the case filed for the attack on UNO Wahida, have been sent to jail after they were produced before a Senior Judicial Magistrate’s Court Friday afternoon following the completion of their remand, confirmed case Court Inspector Israfil Hossain.

On September 5, the court issued a seven-day remand for Nabirul and Santu, two of three people accused in the case. The Detective Branch (DB) started questioning them in their custody that night.

Meanwhile, Asadul Islam, the key accused in the case, who was remanded to DB police for seven days following a court order on September 6, will be produced in court Saturday, said case investigation officer Dinajpur DB Police OC Ismail Faruk.

On September 3, assailants attacked the official residence of UNO Wahida Khanam. They first tied up the doorman and broke in through the ventilators at the back of the house.

The attackers hacked Wahida indiscriminately, leaving her with critical head injuries, and went on to attack her father Ali Sheikh, 70, who rushed in to save her.

Father and daughter were taken to Rangpur Medical College and Hospital. Later, the UNO was airlifted from Rangpur to the National Institute of Neurosciences and Hospital in Dhaka by a Bangladesh Air Force helicopter.
