The explosion at Baitus Salat Jame Mosque of Narayanganj might have been caused by gas leakage, said Mainul Hasan, deputy inspector general (DIG) of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID)’s Dhaka Range.
He also said that the case will be investigated with utmost professionalism and efficiency.
A case has been filed at Fatullah Model police station over the incident and CID has taken over the case.
“As soon as those involved in the incident are identified based on evidence and witnesses, we will file a report with the court,” said Mainul Hasan.
He made the statements to reporters after visiting the incident location at 11:30am on Saturday. Also present on the occasion were Additional DIG (Crime) of CID Imam Hossain, Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) of Narayanganj District Police TI Mosharraf Hossain, Additional Superintendent of Police Mehedi Imran Siddiqui, and Inspector of CID’s Narayanganj division Md Babul Hossain, among others.
He said preliminary investigations suggest that gas leakage may have caused the accident. However, there are issues of power lines, gas leakage, and risky location of the mosque.
“We will look into all the issues. We will be able to uncover the real issues through a comprehensive investigation. We will try to complete the investigation swiftly by collecting the available evidence,” said Mainul.
Asked whether the reports of the investigation committees formed in the incident would be taken into account, he said: “Their investigation is not over yet. Of course we will look into the investigation reports of the committees.
“We will talk to locals and eyewitnesses. There are also expert teams in our department who are working on the case. Evidence has already been collected. We are moving forward with the investigation keeping all the factors in mind.”
Answering the reporters’ questions regarding why even seven days after the incident, no suspect has been arrested yet, he said the case has just been filed.
“We came today (Saturday) to visit the scene. Its investigation will also proceed. We will reach the people involved in this incident and go wherever necessary,” he said.
On September 4, more than 50 people, including women and children, were injured in an explosion during the Isha prayers at the Baitus Salat Jame Mosque in Poschim Tolla.
Thirty seven people were seriously burnt. Already 31 people have died and one has returned home. The condition of the remaining five people is also critical.
