Another suspect arrested in UNO attack

Rangpur range Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Devdas Battachariya disclosed the information at a press briefing held at the office of Dinajpur Superintendent of Police (SP) at around 3pm on Saturday.

Police have made another arrest in connection with the attack on Dinajpur’s Ghoraghat upazila UNO Wahida Khanam and her father Omar Ali Sheikh.

The arrestee, 43-year-old Robiul Islam, worked as a gardener at the UNO’s office before being suspended on theft allegations.

Robiul has primarily confessed to his involvement in the attack, said Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Devdas Battachariya of the police’s Rangpur range.

"We have recovered some evidence based on his confession. Besides, we have found similarity between his confession and the footage of CCTV cameras”, DIG Battachariya told a media call on Saturday at the office of Dinajpur’s Superintendent of Police.

Robiul was detained on Friday evening, said Imam Zafar, officer-in-charge of Detective Branch (DB) of Dinajpur police and the investigating officer (IO) of the case.

Meanwhile, the court of Dinajpur Senior Judicial Magistrate Ismail Hossain remanded Robiul for six days after police moved a petition for 10 days.

Besides, the prime suspect Asadul Haque was sent to jail after his 7-day remand ended, said Court Inspector Israil Hossain.

Earlier police arrested three people in connection with the attack on UNO Wahida and her father in the early hours of September 2 at her official residence.

They are Asadul Haque, Nabirul Islam and Santu Das. They have been placed on seven days' remand.
