Protests against rape continue

Different student organisations, socio-cultural, rights groups and students of different educational institutions across the country on Wednesday continued their protests against rape and violence against women for the third consecutive day.

The demonstrators protested at the government and law enforcement agencies’ inaction to curb violence against women, ruling Awami League and its front organisation leaders and activists’ involvement in such offences and culture of impunity which left such incidents going unabated.

Protesters at places also demanded the resignation of the home minister for his failure and demanded the amendment of the law with the provision of the death sentence for the rapists.

At Shahbagh in the capital, Progressive Students’ Alliance and other left-leaning students’ organisations began demonstration holding posters reading their demands.

They were writing posters and banners against rape and violence criticising the role of police and government in resisting such incidents.

Students of different educational institutions under the banner of ‘Dhorshon o Nipiron Birodhi Chhatra Janata’ held a rally at Shahbagh in the capital, where immediate past Dhaka University Central Students’ Union vice-president Nurul Haque Nur alleged that the ruling party men were involved in rapes and violence against women and were enjoying impunity.

The protesters then brought out a procession carrying black flags.

Protests were reported from the capital’s Uttara, City College intersection and Kakrail areas.

In Faridpur, 20 voluntary organisations formed a human chain in front of Faridpur Press Club and took oath against rape and violence against women.
