A court in Chittagong has placed Awami League leader and Regent Group Chairman Mohammad Shahed, alias Shahed Karim on a four-day remand in a case filed for misappropriating Tk91 lakh from a businessman.
Chittagong Metropolitan Magistrate Shafi Uddin passed the order on Sunday afternoon after police sought a 10-day remand to interrogate Shahed in the case under their custody.
Earlier on the day, Shahed was taken to the court from the Chittagong Central Jail amid tight security around 1pm.
On Saturday, he was escorted to the jail premises from Dhaka.
Zia Uddin Md Jahangir, a Chittagong-based importer of motor parts and proprietor of Mega Motors, lodged the case with Double Mooring police station in the port city on July 13.
According to the case documents, the Regent Group chairman misappropriated Tk91.25 lakh of the plaintiff through deception.
Previously on September 28, a Dhaka court sentenced Shahed to life term imprisonment in an arms case.
Accused in dozens of cases, Shahed was arrested by Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) from Satkhira in the early hours of July 15 when he was trying to flee to India on a boat. He was later airlifted to the capital.
Four days later, a team of Detective Branch of police found his car in front of a house in Sector 11 of Uttara West area in Dhaka.
They seized a pistol with a single bullet from the car and the case was filed under the Arms Act at Uttara West police station.
Shahed was on the run since health officials and RAB raided the Uttara and Mirpur branches of Regent Hospital on July 6, following complaints that the hospital was issuing fake Covid-19 certificates, as well as charging exorbitant fees for the testing and treatment of patients.
RAB also found evidence of at least 6,000 fake Covid-19 test certificates during the raid.
The next day, RAB filed a case against 17 people, including Shahed, at the police station.
