Constable Harunur Rashid, who was suspended in connection with the death of Rayhan Ahmed at the Bandar Bazar police outpost in Sylhet, has been jailed.
Following a three-day remand, Harun was brought before the court of Sylhet Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Ziadur Rahman on Sunday afternoon. Following the hearing, the court ordered him to be sent to jail around 3pm.
Assistant Commissioner (Prosecution) of Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP) Amulya Kumar Chowdhury confirmed the matter.
Harun was arrested on October 23 over his alleged involvement in the custodial death of Rayhan Ahmed. He was subsequently placed on a five-day remand which expired on Thursday.
On the very same day, Harun was brought before the court of Sylhet Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Ziadur Rahman by Muhidul Islam, the investigating officer in the case. Following the hearing, the court granted a three-day remand for Harun, which expired on Sunday.
Rayhan Ahmed was reportedly beaten to death on October 11 in police custody at the Bandar Bazar police outpost. According to the autopsy report, he had 111 injury marks and two of his nails were pulled off.
However, police denied the murder allegation put forward by the family, claiming that he was caught by locals while mugging and was lynched. Police claimed they had found Rayhan wounded from the mob lynching and had taken him to a hospital where he reportedly succumbed to his injuries.
On October 12, Rayhan's wife filed a case under the Torture and Custodial Death (Prevention) Act 2013 with Sylhet Kotwali police station.
So far, four policemen have been suspended from their posts in connection with Rayhan's death, including the key suspect, suspended SI Akbar Hossain Bhuiyan.
Excluding Akbar, the suspended policemen are: assistant sub-inspector Touhid Miya, constable Titu and constable Harunur Rashid – all from Bandar Bazar police outpost.
Moreover, another sub-inspector of the outpost, Hasan Uddin, was suspended as he helped Akbar escape and is accused of concealing information.
