HC asks 3 hospitals to explain denial of treatment to newborn

The High Court on Monday directed the authorities of two state-owned hospitals and a private hospital to explain within 48-hour why they would not face action for denying treatment to newborn twins causing their death.

The hospitals are - Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital, Dhaka Shishu Hospital, and Islami Bank Hospital, Mugda, Dhaka.

The online bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice Ahmed Sohel issued the directive after the bench’s staff Abul Kamal Azad, father of the twin, drew the court’s attention bringing the newborn’s bodies on the Supreme Court compound.

Wife of Azad on Monday gave birth to the immature twin inside a CNG-run three-wheeler on their way to Islami Bank Hospital, Mugda, which denied them the treatment and advised the parents to take the twin to Dhaka Shishu Hospital for incubator facilities.

But Dhaka Shishu Hospital also denied their treatment stating that there was no room in the incubators.

Later, the ambulance carrying the twin rushed to the BSMMU Hospital but it also refused to admit them.

A duty-doctor declared the twin dead by checking them from the ambulance.
