Suspended DIG Prisons Partha Gopal Banik indicted in graft case

A court in Dhaka has framed charges in a graft case filed against suspended deputy inspector general (DIG) of prisons Partha Gopal Bonik.

Dhaka Special Court 10 Judge Md Nazrul Islam framed the charges against the accused on Wednesday.

The court also set November 18 for recording depositions of the prosecution witnesses in the case.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Earlier on August 31, Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge KM Emrul Kayesh accepted the charge sheet and transferred the case to Dhaka Special Court 10 for holding hearing on charge framing.

On August 24, Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Assistant Director M Salahuddin, also the investigating officer of the case, submitted the charge sheet.

On July 28, 2019, the anti-graft watchdog arrested Partha Gopal Banik, DIG (Prisons) of Sylhet Central Jail, on charges of irregularities and corruption.

He was arrested after Tk80 lakh was recovered during a raid on his house in the Bhooter Goli area of Dhanmondi in the capital.

He earned the money through bribery, corruption, and irregularities, said ACC spokesperson Pranab Kumar Bhattacharya.

ACC Director Muhammad Yusuf had interrogated Banik for allegations of corruption and irregularities when he was posted at Chittagong Central Jail.

Later, an ACC team conducted the drive at his home.

The anti-graft body filed the case against Partha on July 29, 2019.
