A Sylhet court on Tuesday placed suspended Sub-Inspector (SI) Akbar Hossain Bhuiyan to a seven-day remand in connection with the murder case of Rayhan Ahmed in police custody.
The court of Sylhet Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Abul Kashem granted the remand around 1:30pm in the case registered under the Torture and Custodial Death (Prevention) Act, against unknown people by Rayhan's wife Tahmina Akhter.
Confirming, Md Ali, a bench clerk at the court said Inspector Awlad Hossain, the case investigation officer of Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) sought the remand after producing him before the court.
Akbar was brought to court earlier on the day while agitated mob gathered outside the court demanding justice for slain Rayhan, 34.
On Monday, Akbar was apprehended by members of a local Khashia community in India while he was fleeing via bordering Companiganj in Sylhet, according to sources.
Akbar, the Bandar Bazar police outpost officer, was suspended following the death of Rayhan Ahmed in police custody in Sylhet on October 11.
On October 11, at around 3am, Rayhan was taken to the Bandarbazar outpost of Sylhet’s Katowali police station and tortured to death by a few police officers, including Akbar.
