28 remanded over arson attacks on buses in Dhaka

A Dhaka court on Friday granted remand for 28 people in separate cases filed with Shahbagh, Paltan, Motijheel, Bangshal, Kalabagan, Sutrapur, Khilkhet, and Turag police stations over the arson attacks on buses in Dhaka on Thursday.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate's Court passed the order after a hearing in the afternoon.

The investigating officers of the cases presented the accused in the court and asked for remand for different periods to investigate the matter.

The court granted three-day remand to six accused in two separate cases filed with Shahbagh police station. The remanded accused are Hazrat Ali, Moinuddin, Abu Saeed Shanto, Abul Kalam Azad, Abu Sufian, and Sohail.

In a case filed with Paltan police station, Aliza Al Ahmed Mitu and Mehedi Hasan Yasin were remanded for three days; Fazlur Bari, Altaf Hossain, Naeem Pradhan, Alif Mahmud, Humayun Rashid Tutul, Khandaker Mashukur Rahman, and Rasheduzzaman were remanded for five days.

In a case filed with Motijheel police station, Abdur Rahman was remanded for two days, while Zakir hossain Hossain was remanded for three days in another case.

The court placed Safiuddin Ahmed Sentu and Mridul Rahman Johnny alias Morshedur Rahman Johnny on two days’ remand in a case filed with Bangshal police station.

Accused Mahifur Rahman Tipu and Mainuddin Chowdhury were remanded for two days each in a case filed with Kalabagan police station.

Four accused in a case filed with Sutrapur police station were placed on a three-day remand.

In a case filed with Khilkhet police station, Moshiur Rahman and Najrul Islam were remanded for two days.

The court placed Sohel Mia on a three-day remand in a case filed with Turag police station.

As many as nine buses, including two used for carrying government staff, were set on fire at various places in the capital between 12pm and 4:30pm on Thursday, according to police and fire service.

The incidents took place at a time when the Dhaka 18 constituency went to the by-polls.

No casualties were reported, according to the Fire Service and Civil Defence.

DMP spokesperson Deputy Commissioner Walid Hossain told this newspaper that the arsonists carried out the attacks posing as passengers.

"We have collected security camera footage from the scenes to identify the perpetrators," he added.

According to DMP sources, BNP leader Ishraque Hossain, who lost the DSCC mayoral race in February, was accused in a case filed with Motijheel police station along with Motijheel unit BNP Convener Fazlul Haque and several others.

BNP student wing Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal's President Fazlur Rahman Khokon and General Secretary Iqbal Hossain Shyamol were charged in cases filed with Shahbagh police station.

Top brass of the student wing's Dhaka University unit were also accused in the cases.
